The Mayor of Kanifing Municipal today launched a

D42million BMZ-KMC Bakoteh Dumpsite Project which has been in the works for the past 2 years according to Mayor Bensouda.

The SOS Children’s Villages The Gambia and Herman German Fonds Deutschland in partnership with the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) have successfully secured funding from BMZ (German Federal Ministry of Economic and Development Cooperation) to a tune of 768,683 Euros which is approximately GMD 42,661,906 to include:

  • Construction of 2 concrete access roads within the dumpsite to enable waste collection vehicles to navigate the site more easily, especially during the rainy season.
  • Improved emergency response through the installation of multiple fire hydrants.
  • Enhanced security through the provision of 30 solar lights and mobility for Kanifing Municipal Police.
  • Greening of the environment through green planting.
  • Improved health and safety for those working on site through the development of sanitary facilities and washing spaces.
  • Promotion of recycling activities with the construction of open sheds for sorting purposes.

The KMC will be contributing over 4 million Dalasi to this project in order to see the fulfilment of the council’e transformational activities.

According to the KMC Mayor, the Council sees the project’s activities as a perfect complement to its own capital investment of nearly 10 million Dalasi in the construction of a 3.5 metres tall, 1.8km long fence, in order to protect children from entering the site and being exposed to its many hazards.

“The Council remains committed to its goal of closing Bakoteh dumpsite and developing it into a transfer station. The Council continues to work with the Ministry of Lands and other Councils to secure land for the development of a sanitary landfill within the Greater Banjul Area. This remains our vision and we are working tirelessly to realize it.” He concluded.
