The Member of the parliament for the Sandu constituency, Honourable Muhenera, mentioned that, he as a person has condemned the skin bleaching due to the health implications which is attached to it. “With regards to repealing the skin bleaching bill, I voted against it, because if you look at the skin bleaching it has lot of negative impact which is more than the positive impacts” he stated. 

He added that, skin bleaching is a practice which can be emulated by our school going children, he described the to be a problem considering the health problems caused by this practice such as liver failure, kidney failure among other issues.

He stated that, the Gambia already has its health system overwhelm, he added that health problems associated with skin bleaching will expose our heath system to another major setback, he stated, that each day Gambians die of a health complication which could have been avoided but based on the efficient health system this happen in the manner its happening, according to him this influenced his decision to vote against skin bleaching in the parliament.

According to him no one can explain to you how the skin bleaching substances are being made and what are contained in the substance which exposes its users to health hazards.

“We have no one or things that can access this product when they are imported into the county , our borders are porous and the neighbouring county capitalise on this advantage to fill our markets with this products , I have voted it down because I don’t want the society to be destroyed” he concluded.
