Members of the national assembly have voted against repealing the skin bleaching Prohibition Act with 23 members voting against the repealing of the Act while only 10 voted for the repealing of the law.

As a result, the selling and importation of skill bleaching creams continue to be illegal in the country and any person who administers or applies on his or her body any cream or substance, that bleaches his or her skin, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine five thousand dalasi.

A person who without a valid prescription purchases or has in his or her possession any of the creams or substances listed in the Second Schedule commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of five thousand dalasis. However, it remains to be seen is how the law will be implemented.
