President Adama Barrow has rescinded his decision to appoint Mr Oremi Joiner as the Deputy Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission with immediate effect based on what he called “emerging evidence that contradicts the appointment of Mr. Oremi Joiner as IEC Deputy Chairperson”.

The information which was carried out in a press release by The Gambia Government Spokesperson Ebrima G. Sankareh indicated that “This decision is consistent with President Barrow’s commitment to democratic pluralism, transparency and total accountability both in the administration of justice in The Gambia as well as our electoral process.

The UDP has earlier released a statement citing the illegality of Mr. Oremi appointment which they claimed contravene Section 42 (5) (c) of the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia. The party demanded revocation of the appointment further disclosing that Mr. Oremi Joiner is a co-opted member of the National People’s Party’s (NPP) Banjul Regional Executive Committee.

The statement asserted that “the UDP called on all patriotic Gambians to condemn these acts of illegitimacy and demands the IEC further explains the reasons for such unprofessional and unconstitutional actions being taken when we have only months to go to the Presidential elections of The Gambia.
