A security turned operative of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Lamin Darboe has been branded as truly one of a kind to have faced the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC) by the lead counsel Essa Faal. Mr Darboe was facing the commission as one of the most adversely implicated in dozens of tortures by multiple witnesses detained at the NIA during the former regime, allegations he denied.
“If you continue at this rate you would emerge as the biggest liar to have appeared before the commission” Essa cautioned Darboe who remain adamant that he did not torture anyone before finally accepting to beat only one Sarjo Touray.
“If you continue like this I would ask the chair to hold you for contempt and send you to mile II-let him proceed and test the commission and see. The commission cannot sit here and allow a gross indiscipline” the lead counsel warned angrily, responding to Mr Darboe for talking over him and not answering the questions asked.
Darboe who informed the TRRC that he has only Grade 9 certificate rose through the ranks to become Officer Commanding (OC) of the infamous Special Operation Unit of the NIA, a feat questioned by the Lead Counsel Essa Faal. “Do you think it is fair that people that have diplomas in other fields of advance learning, and you have only a Grade 9 certificate, you think is fair” Faal quizzed. He added that among members of the special Darboe was the one with the least qualification.
Mr Darboe is said to have arrested 115 people and detained them at the NIA during the course of his service.
