People from different walks of life have uttered dismay over inconsistency in the cost of various consumable products at the various local markets in Gambia. This has spiked up discussions and debates within communities, thinking of possible remedies to curb what many would describe as market insecurity.
Many blamed the government for the current price hike, indicating that proper monitoring is not being implemented to control the market instead to determine the cost of products entirely lies in the hands of the vendors.
Currently the price of items are skyrocketing , one of the variety of rice which is labelled “faas” was sold at D1200 now catapulted to D1500, American rice was available at D1100 now changed to D1250, Bag of onions was available at D450 and jumped to D700.
The kairaba News Network went out and about to sound the opinions of the ordinary people over this concern of price hike, creating an ugly outlook of our commodity markets as many described the situation as unbearable.
In her view Fatoumatta Darboe, mentioned that the recent price surge is worrying, as many families in the Gambia do not earn lucrative salaries or even be employed at all. She added that those that are lucky to be on payroll either with the central Government or private sector may not have their monthly earning commensurate with the realities of the market.
Madam Darboe, challenged the Government to ensure reduction in the price of basic commodities, she urged the price control team to carry out survey on the market prices so that decision can be taken to address this unacceptable situation.
Abubacarr Jallow, a Business man at Bakoteh market lamented that, it is not their wish to add prices and he was quick to state that price increase is determine by a factor which is beyond them.
Khadijatou Manneh local vendor in Dippa Garage market stated that, they equally feel the pinch of the market situation, each day, they the vendors expect a good sales from the market, this dreams of theirs end up being shattered also lots of their goods are returned due to poor sales, she urged the Government to look into this matter for redress in the best interest of all.
