The oldest opposition political party in The Gambia, People Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) held its congress from the 6th to 8th of March at Kairaba Beach Hotel.
At the congress the party sympathisers stormed the venue in large numbers with beautiful signings and chanting the slogan of the party, whilst remaining hopeful to receive words of wisdom from the party echelons.
Speaking at the congress, Sidia Jatta, Wuli born politician urged all the Progressive Democratic Forces to unite for system change which has been the slogan for the party for about 35 years . He added that it has been a very long journey for the party since their formation. According to him, the party went through huddles in their endeavour to ensure the citizens are informed of their rights, freed off political and economic bondage, he stated that PDOIS has been in the forefront to dislodge a dictatorship government which suppressed the people for 22 years, PDOIS played a principal role by being a catalyst to the formation of united front referred to be the coalition in 2016, through which all these came to reality .
Mr jatta, renewed their party’s stand to continue the struggle for system change as they did to change a regime, this he said remains their fundamental objective, he lectured that, system change begins from individuals, the way one thinks, way of movement and once perception about issues.
He reiterated that, the second journey, must focus on changing the mindset of the people about issues, he added that people need to stand united and collectively disregard oppressive rule, and create systems which will serve the interest of the country . He stated that people should believe and recognise the sovereignty of the state, defend and recognise rights and work in the best interest of the state.
Halifa, Sallah who once again was identified as the political battle axe for the party, promised to lay his life against Gambians being subjected to bondage, he indicated that life expectancy for ordinary Gambian is below the age of 70 years; he added that many Gambians have died and many will die before end of 2021.
Honourable Sallah, Challenged all Gambians, to form a united front to aim at fighting to end ignorance , to remove the dust in the eyes of the people that create an image that makes people believe that they are powerless, helpless even though the sovereignty rely in the hands of the people and power belongs to us .
