The Supreme Islamic Council of The Gambia (SIC) has on Thursday 11th March 2021 engaged with numerous Islamic organisations in The Gambia to unify and bring them all under one umbrella.
A meeting which was held at the council’s headquarters in Kanifing, brought together representatives from different Islamic Organisations in the country.
The president of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, Shaykh Essa Foday Darboe, urged all the organizations to come together as one and work in unison to push their collective agenda forward.
Ustadh Cherno Darboe, the principle of Tallinding Islamic Institute, said their union was established in 1963 by the top scholars and businessmen in the Gambia. “Since the establishment of the institution, it has become a big beacon of Islamic teachings, education, development and involvement in humanitarian activities,” he said.
Lamin K Fatty, representative from The Islamic Solidarity Association of West Africa, said, their organisation was established in 1979 and the founder of the Association was the late erudite Oustass Hatab Bojang of Gunjur.
The Association is a broad-based Association that has its branches all over West Africa and its central centre activities in the Gambia, he added.
He further stated that the idea is solely geared towards propagating Islam and giving the true representation and meaning of Islam through establishing several institutions in the Gambia and West Africa through qualified people to carry out the mission. “Part of our achievements is providing skill training to students by means of giving out scholarships to them and also encouraging computer literacy,” he said.
Abdullah Lutfi said his organization is concerned with humanitarian works to assist the poor people in society. “We engaged in the slaughtering of sheep during Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha and shared it among the poor and the needy,” he said.
Concluding, Abdullah added that part of their plan is to build a health-care centre and an orphanage for the orphans, a school attached to every mosque and mortuary. The organization is supporting 102 orphans with 150 dollars which is equivalent to 7000 Dalasis for each orphan.
