The Member of the Parliament for Wuli Honourable Sawaibou Conateh who heads the National Assembly standing committee on human and people’s right spoke about the disability bill which many critics blasted its delay for discussion in the national assembly.

The Chairperson on this committee, indicated that the disability bill is top on the priority list of the parliament, he added that the most significant aspect which is debate has been held, he said that only little amendments on the bill is left which can be done at the level of the committees in the chambers with the participation of the Ministry of Justice and others stakeholders. He stated that, the disability bill centred generally on the promotion of the rights of the disable which includes right to access public buildings, to access recreational facilities, right to attend school among host of other rights but all geared to ensure their inclusion in the developmental process of the country.

He assured the disable community that issues are very significant to the members of the national assembly and its being agreed by the parliamentarians that they established the council for the disables instead of a commission all in their interest.

The host of the new and amendments bills awaiting further discussion at the parliament includes, persons  disability bills which top the list, Gambia Anti corruption bill 2019 , Criminal offense and procedure bills, prevention and prohibition of torture bill, international crime bill 2020, labour amendment bill 2020,and public service bill, access to information bill .

Mr Conateh urged the public to exercise little patience as the work of the national assembly is not an easy thing, he mentioned that committees need to carry their task report back to the preliminary committee which is followed by other procedural measures before the bill can’t be finally converted into a law.
