As water and electricity are basic utilities, it’s a fundamental right for any human being irrespective of where you live to benefit from these basic services.

It’s against this background that, the opposition Gambia Action Party  (GAP) through its party leader Musa Yali Bachilly has recently amplified the call for government intervention to help the people of the Upper River Region (URR) to enjoy basic and fundamental utilities such as water and electricity,  absence of which slapped people of the region in the face especially in this month of Ramadan. According to Bachilly this has increased the price of ice blocks to D75 in the region which he describes as unacceptable.

He added that the ordinary people in the region battles with survival which makes it impossible to pay for such amount to get ice block for the families to quench their taste after a daylong fasting; he accused the government of clearly disregarding the community of URR and they being deprived of their basic and fundamental rights.

GAP’s secretary General Bachilly, blamed the government for ignoring the development in this part of the Gambia, he indicated that over 56 years the region has been marginalised in fundamental developments which according to GAP should be the primary responsibility of the Government to provide.

“in this 21st century and fifty six years after the attainment of nationhood, our people still face the same problems ought to have been solved but the government continually disregard the most important basic necessity as far as human existence is concern”

Bachilly stressed. He promises that the GAP led government will work towards equitable support and distribution of the state resources through effective management of the state resources.

GAP urges the people of the Upper River Region to remain patient and hopeful that, in December GAP will change the narratives as resources of the state will be evenly distributed amongst the regions with the view to create an atmosphere of equality.
