The Gambia continues to battle with Covid-19 as four new cases are being recorded on July 6 2020, rounding up the total number of confirmed cases to 61 with a new death record of the first medical worker to die of Covid-19.

Case 61 said to be the first health practitioner to die of Covid-19 worked as a senior nurse at the Edward Francis small teaching hospital at aged 50. The demise whose sample was taken after his death on July 4 2020, was tested positive. He is said to have been a diabetic patient who suffered from severe pneumonia like symptoms as well.

The Gambia Covid-19 situational reports states that, case 58 and 59 comes from a Belgian couple, both 64, who were immediately taken into quarantine on their arrival, by an SN Brussels flight, on the 22 June 2020, and were consequently tested positive for Covid-19 on 5 July 2020.

“They both tested negative for COVID-19 at the commencement of their quarantine period. Their second samples were collected on July 4 and tested positive for COVID-19 on 05 July.”

Case 60 is a Gambian female UN staff, 45, who was also taken into quarantine on July 1 2020, following her recent travel history from Liberia by a WFP-chartered A’Sky flight.

With the government of The Gambia relaxing most of the prevention measures, could we anticipate for more new COVID-19 cases?
