African descendants residing in The Gambia over the weekend donated thirty-five (35) packages of corrugate worth eighty thousand dalasi (D80,000,00) to the windstorm victims within the greater Banjul area.
Hatib Kujabi (Adrain Ryan) a donor said the windstorm has affected many families and even cause lost of lives in some parts of the country. “We donate the roofing materials to the families affected by the windstorm to help them recover their building roofs,” Hatib Kujabi said. Hatib said victims of the windstorm needed urgent help and that is why African Descendants deem it fit to chip in and offer support, he said.
He added that the government cannot do it alone in supporting all the families affected by the windstorm, he explained. “We are hoping to further our support to other families affected by the windstorm,” Hatib Kujabi said. “We thank the President for calling for good Samaritans to help.” “Gambia is our home and we must do what we can to help,” he said.
He further said the materials donated will help the beneficiaries during this moment, he stated. “We thank God for always given us the strength to support the people in The Gambia,” Hatib Kujabi said. He urged members of BlaXit and COAD to contribute more funds so that they can extend their support to other victims of the windstorm, he added.
The beneficiaries are; Honorable Sulayman Saho of Central Badibou constituency 7 packages, Honorable Saikou Marong of LatriKunda Sabiji constituency 7 packages, Honorable Abdoulie Ceesay of old Yundum Constituency 7 packages, Alkalo Faye of Busura Village 2 packages, Honorable Alhagie Sowe of Gimara Constituency 5 packages, and other 7 packages were given to individual from Nemakunku and Lamen village.
Honorable Sulayman Saho describe the donation as timely. Honorable Saho said the windstorm has claimed many lives and left many families devastated, he explained. “We are glad to receive the materials that are of high demand due to massive windstorm,” Honorable Sulayman Saho said.
He expressed profound gratitude to BlaXit and COAD for supporting the victims of the windstorm. “We are calling on others to help the families affected by the windstorm because the government cannot do it alone,” said Honorable Sulayman Saho National Assembly member for Badibou constituency.
The Badibou NAM said BlaXit has show the love and care they have for the country. “This is what we all looking for is to work together as partners and friends in whatever situation,” Honorable Sulayman Saho said.
All the beneficiaries from the gesture share similar appreciation to the donors. They both described the donation as timely and significant.
Beneficiaries said the donation help will help to complement government efforts as communities are battling with windstorm crisis. They called on other people to help the victims of the windstorm.
The windstorm has claimed the lives of ten people (10) and displaced one thousands five hundred people according to government figures show on social media.
The Gambia Red Cross Society volunteers are going round to offer first aid to the casualties. National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) officials are also working round the clock to collect data on the destruction caused by the windstorm.
