COVID—19: Bakau Residents React To Confirmed Cases
Following the announcement made by the ministry of health on May 02 2020, about the five confirmed cases of covid—19 in Bakau. This has caused a lot of panic, stress, and anxiety amongst the people.
As Kairaba News Network conducted interviews within Bakau to seek for the thoughts and reaction of the people in here is what we have for you.
The councilor of Old Bakau/Cape Point Ward, Mr. Lamin Dibba said, the news have caused a lot of panic and fear amongst the people, because he was never expecting Bakau to register any case of this pandemic at the moment.
“I received the news a day before yesterday about one confirmed case, and yesterday I received news via a message stating we have another five (5) new cases of which two (2) are already confirmed positive has caused alarm bells ringing and the fear and panic caused by the news is really affecting the people of the community.”
He reiterate that, people should observe social distancing and follow the guidelines given by the WHO in order to be safe.
Lamin “Tentu” Jawara a resident of bakau, also said that, after receiving this news as a citizen of the Gambia, and native of Bakau, it has become a priority for him to see means and ways to help the people tackle the virus not to escalate.
“some people within the community do not adhere to the safety precautionary measures and guidelines given by the health ministry.” He concluded by saying that, the virus has already found its way to the town and the only way out is by taking advises and to also reduce the panic level.
A resident of Bakau name withheld, lamented, and stressed on the issue, accusing the government of calumny aiming to dirty Bakau’s name. He said the virus is not true and there is no case in Bakau. he went further to accuse the youth who where conducting a sensitization campaign on the Covid—19 of receiving money from the government to support the propaganda, by saying Bakau has a confirmed case, he said this nowhere close to the truth.
Halifa Jammeh, former NAM member for Bakau, explains that, the news was a very big surprise to him and left him very frighten knowing what the virus can do. He alluded to the fact that the virus is true and real, people should make sure the cases do not go beyond this, looking at how the people in the town interact, he concluded.
