The poor drainage system in the Gambia has been affecting pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, especially during the rainy season.

The problem is worsen by the bad road condition in both rural and urban areas.  Experts say the way some roads are constructed, they do not have effective means through which water can pass through, resulting to the frequent floods even with little rain.

The problem is worse in their community, says the residents of Sinchu Alagie.

“In my area, you cannot go out even after rain stops because the place is always flooded and muddy. Our roads are so bad that it is difficult to convince a taxi driver to drop you off,” Binta, a resident of Sinchu Alagie said.

Binta has been living in Sinchu Alagie for almost ten years now but she said during this period “nothing has changed.”

The residents of Sinchu Alagie lamented that, even though they are grateful to the philanthropists who do help by filling the potholes on the road with gravel, they need more durable and long term solution to the problem of poor roads and bad drainage systems.
