First Lady of the Republic of the Gambia, Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, called on the government to reintroduce adult literacy programs for women regarding it as key to collective fight against poverty.
She was speaking at the commemoration of the World International Women’s Day on Monday. Madam Bah- Barrow emphasized that educating women and girls is the key to developing every nation.
She was speaking at an event organized by the Women’s Bureau in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare. She urged parents to send their daughters to school, allow them to graduate instead of marrying them off early.
First Lady Bah-Barrow tasked the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare Hon. Fatou Kinteh, to collaborate with the ministries of Education to make this a reality.
As part of activities marking this historic day of empowering women, 15 women groups within the KMC were awarded a total of D1, 420,000 from the Women Enterprise Fund.
