Brikama is a cosmopolitan community largely contested between APRC and the UDP in the past electoral circles but the political dimension is shifting after the emergence of Dr Ismaila Ceesay. A source familiar with Brikama politics informed us that since the emergence of Dr Ceesay the political dimension is moving towards the outspoken political science lecturer of the University of the Gambia.  

“I can tell you with certainty that Ceesay is growing his base in Brikama especially among supporters of Baba Giks, a popular figure in Brikama. They felt disappointed with the UDP for not selecting Baba for the Brikama Area Council chairmanship election instead of Sherrifo Sonko who the party has now fallout with” the source disclosed.

Dr Ceesay who himself is a native of the said town, is slowly increasing his supporter base particularly among the UDP supporters. “These people have been angry for years now and the emergence of Ceesay only serves as a gateway. The elderly natives are largely divided between UDP and the NPP, but the youths in particular now seem to identify themselves more with Dr Ceesay”.

As the presidential elections get closer, it remains to be seen where Brikama will go. However, if anyone is going to be the next president of The Gambia, Brikama has a huge role to play with with more than 50 thousand votes to be contested.
