The residents of the coastal village of Brufut recently expressed frustration over the poor road network the village is slapped with since its creation. The road leading into Brufut is in a sorry state, very poor, resulting in some commercial drivers displaying reluctance to carry passengers to and from Brufut on a daily basis.
The inhabitants of this village have mobilised resources internally through community initiatives to lay gravel from the main junction of the village to their main garage which is about 1 kilometre distance.
This reporter, has sounded the opinions of some residents of the village, Ousman Manneh, mentioned that, it’s very unfortunate for the people of Brufut as they have been ostracised by both the first and the current regime in terms of benefiting from social projects, he lamented that residents of Brufut struggle especially early in the morning, always rushing to caught up the public transport system, failure of which may result in one arriving at work late or absence due to unavailability of vehicles, all caused by poor road network.
He stressed that the government has failed them completely. From the time of President Jawara to now, Brufut never benefited from standard road infrastructure. According him, promises were made by politicians just to canvass their vote and later drop everything in the trash bin the moment they occupy presidency which he describes as their (politicians) principal interest
He went further to state that, should an emergency occur, this does create a very difficult situation as people struggle to appeal to drivers to drive them out of the village due to the poor road leading to and from Brufut. He also narrated that drivers prefer to ply Tippa Garage to Tanji than go to Brufut which he described as ‘unfortunate’.
Mr Manneh, calls on the Barrow lead Government to fulfil their political promises by shifting attention to Brufut with specific focus on road construction, he assured that Brufut will throw weight behind anyone who solves this major concern for its residents.
This reporter, caught up with Fatou Ceesay, a fish vendor from Brufut, said President Barrow promised to address the road problem in Brufut in early March, but was quick to say no sign of this promise is visible anywhere in Brufut. She highlighted the people of Brufut have now got their eyes wide open, further stating that the residents can never be submissive to political ploy advanced by politicians in their interest of canvassing for their votes.
