The West Africa Birds Study Association (WABSA) on Saturday 15 August 2021, embarked on planning mangroves trees along the beach side of Banjul the capital city of The Gambia. The aim of this restoration is to create more space as a natural breeding ground for marine spices which is sponsored by Banjul city council, EU project.
Speaking at the planning exercise, Alfusainey Gano, project manager of WABSA said this is the third year of the project and it’s ready to help Banjul to make it green adding that the project is 1. 3 millions Euro which is ready to support the planning of mangroves to make Banjul beautiful. He added that the project supports running five different areas and today’s event is to support the green light of Banjul as a green project he noted.
He further said the project is expected to plant over 5000 mangroves before the end of the project and today we plant around 500 coconut which more are underway.
According to him, before the end of this project they will make the city beautiful and green so that it will attract tourists to stay in Banjul for holidays and also enjoy the green area, he explained . “Even in Islamic Allah said to anyone who plants a tree, there is a reward which no one can account and he thanked the youth of Banjul who are ready to work with them day and night just to make the city green.
Amadou John the national west birds association coordinator said they are planning more mangroves like last year because this project is three years and it’s is running in Banjul area.
Mr John said the youth of Banjul are very happy for this project. He added that the project is helping the youth to realize their dreams of making Banjul a great area that will attract tourism and investors.
He expressed delight to the youth for their readiness to support the project. He said the youth are working voluntarily and no one has been forced to do the work. He further thanked the youth for turning in their large group to witness the planting exercise.
Representing the Banjul youth, Fatou Fatajo also expressed her profound appreciation to the project team and she reassured the youth commitment to endure the project and reach its goals.
She said Banjul is the capital of the Gambia and it deserves to look attractive so that anyone who enters there will not like to leave. “We want more development projects like this to come and help us to achieve our dreams,” she said.
