CENTRAL GOVERNMENT: To Reconstruct Basse Market

Basse Area Council on 23 April 2020, received officials from The Gambian Agency for the Management of Public Works (GAMWORKS), ahead of the reconstruction of the devastated Basse market.

The visit, said, Omar Drammeh, the IPRO of Basse Area Council, came as a result of the council’s effort to bring back to life the living conditions of affected business men and women in Basse, following the aftermath of the devastating fire outbreak that ravaged the entire market to ashes.

“We are very happy to announce that Basse Area Council received officials from GAMWORKS who are sent by the office of the President to survey, design and plan for the reconstruction of the market,” he said. ” We have also realized that some parts of the market are been occupied by intruders, and we will take necessary steps to resolve the issue accordingly,” he concluded.

For his part, Furu Gomez, GAMWORKS project manager, said, he has been sent by the management of GAMWORKS through the office of the President to do the physical measurements of the site, and come out with a beautiful design for the market. “We want this market to be number one in The Gambia, and that is why I came with my team to survey, design and plan for the reconstruction of the market, he added.

It could be recalled that President Adama Barrow, on the 26 February 2020, visited the destroyed market and made a donation of D2,000,000 (Two million dalasi) to the fire victims, and also promised that central government would undertake the reconstruction, and build a standard market for the people of the Upper River Region.
